Daniel,
When the house is set on the cribbing, it's directly above where it will end up. It's amazing, the truck driver backed this huge house into the excavation, and hit the stakes I'd planted for the location nearly dead on the money first time... now that's some fine parallel parking. When they take it down off the cribbing, they put six hydraulic jacks under it, one in the middle of each cribbing stack, on a board about three courses of timbers from the top. The hydraulic jacks are all connected to a truck and can be raised and lowered very precisely together. So, they raise the house up a little, then they take out a couple courses of the timbers, then lower it down to sit on the next remaining course of timbers. Then they move the jacks down to a lower level and repeat the process, until the house sits on the walls built under it, and they can take out all of the remaining timbers.

The Arxx form are like big styrofoam legos. They have a wall of 2" styrofoam on each side, with an 8" gap in the middle which contains hard plastic webbing that connects the styrofoam walls and gives a place to lay rebar in. The individual blocks are snapped together, and when they're all up, concrete is poured into the 8" gap in the center, and you have a foundation wall with 2" of styrofoam on each side, which stays on, giving you an R-50 insulation value for the basement.

The donation for the bricks is $100 for each. On the site, www.fremonthouserescue.com, you can order one (or two, or as many as you want) through PayPal, and specify what you want each to say.

Yeah, come on up, would love to see you and show you the details of this large and foolish project... and maybe put a hammer or shovel in your hand.

Steven, I'm curious about the removal of the cribbing. How exactly is that done so the house comes down right where it should. Seems critical. And what are the ARXX forms made of......? Also, how much is it to buy a brick or two for the garden? I think Isabel & I need to schedule a weekend trip up to Seattle to help out in the process. Maybe I can get Heather to come with us......

Love,

Great to hear from you and love the blog. Don't even have a clue as to what WordPress is(got lost in there for a minute)!
I'm so thrilled to hear about your progress, can't wait to see it!
Toward the end of the "summer tour" I became plagued with plantar fasciitis which kinda feels like someone driving a nail into my heel. Now it's much better, but I can't really stand still on it for to long. Walking is OK but not too much.
BUT... I would like to help with any light weight stuff or go-fer type stuff,I think of myself as "borderline handy" and I have a ton of vintage and assorted hardware type stuff you're welcome to.

Happy new year and Happy New House. G.
